Google AI Overview Checker: Find Cited Keywords

The Google AI Overview checker finds keywords for which Google’s AI summary cites your domain, then returns supporting metrics such as volume, estimated traffic value, difficulty, CPC, and intent. Choose a market and language before running it. This is a current dataset lookup, not daily mention monitoring.

How does the Google AI Overview checker work?

The checker looks up a domain against the selected market and language, then returns keywords where the available Google AI Overview data includes that domain as a cited source.

  1. 01

    Enter the target domain

Submit the domain without a protocol so the lookup can match its cited pages across the dataset.

  2. 02

  3. 03

    Review cited keywords

What is our expert’s verdict on this AI Overview checker?

I use a domain-level citation list to answer a question Search Console’s limited-rollout generative AI report does not map to queries: which keywords are associated with AI Overview citations for this site? The opportunity metrics help sort the result, but they are estimates. The main limitation is time: a lookup is not a daily tracker, and Google can change both the summary and its cited sources.

How does our expert use AI citation keywords?

Emre Elbeyoglu's working notes

  1. 01

    Protect proven citations first

Review pages already cited for valuable queries before chasing a large list of unproven topics.

  2. 02

    Open the cited page

Identify the exact passage, evidence, or format that may support the summary instead of optimizing only for the keyword.

  3. 03

    Check the organic result too

Compare the cited URL with its standard Google position and the other pages competing for the query.

  4. 04

    Group by page and intent

Several keywords may cite the same URL. Grouping them can reveal one page worth protecting or one content gap worth addressing.

  5. 05

    Recheck material queries

Save the date, market, and language, then repeat high-value checks because AI-generated answers and sources can change.

What does an AI Overview citation keyword tell you?

It tells you that the available data associates your domain with a cited source in Google’s AI-generated summary for that query and market. That is a visibility event, not proof of a click, conversion, permanent citation, or first-place organic ranking.

Use the list to find pages that already earn citation visibility. Those pages give you a stronger starting point than a generic checklist because you can inspect the exact content Google selected.

How should you prioritize the returned keywords?

Sort with business context before chasing the largest volume:

  1. Protect valuable citations. Find queries tied to qualified traffic, product evaluation, or a topic your brand needs to own.
  2. Group keywords by cited page. One strong page may appear across several related queries.
  3. Check intent. A high-volume informational query and a lower-volume buying query need different pages and success measures.
  4. Verify the live SERP. Use the Google SERP checker to see the current organic result set and competing pages.
  5. Record the date and market. Citations can change as Google regenerates answers and refreshes sources.

Volume, CPC, difficulty, and traffic value are estimates. They help sort work; they do not measure the citation itself.

What should you inspect on a cited page?

Look for the passage that answers the query directly. Note any original data, first-hand example, table, definition, or constraint that makes the passage easy to extract and trust. Also check whether the page is technically accessible, internally linked, and clear about who wrote or reviewed it.

Do not add special markup that describes content users cannot see. Google’s official AI features documentation says pages need to meet the normal Search technical requirements and be eligible for a snippet. It does not require a separate AI schema or a new text file.

How should you investigate a missing citation?

A missing citation can mean several things: no AI Overview appeared, the overview used other sources, the dataset did not capture the query, or your page was not eligible or competitive for the answer.

Start with the live query. Compare the cited sources, their page types, and the passages supporting the summary. Then decide whether your site has a relevant page with evidence the current sources lack. If the answer is no, write for that missing user need rather than copying the cited pages.

The non-commodity content checklist provides a useful test: the page should contain first-party evidence, a specific point of view, or a working asset that an answer engine cannot reproduce from open-web consensus alone.

Why should citations be rechecked?

AI Overviews are generated search features. Google may show them for some queries and not others, and the source set can change. A saved lookup becomes meaningful only when it includes the date, domain, market, language, and cited URL.

For ongoing reporting, use a tracking system that stores repeated observations. This free checker is best for finding the current keyword set and deciding which pages deserve that deeper monitoring.
